As a designer and artist, I often delve into the realm of abstraction, where I blend contrasting elements to create new forms. I manipulate and reshape images, twisting them into creations vastly different from the original. For this book project, I drew inspiration from the intricate patterns and textures of nature. With the precision and control of geometric and artificial shapes, I am weaving together a tapestry of natural and human-made elements that come together in a harmonious creation, blurring the lines between reality and imagination.
Blending bacteria and geometric patterns: a metaphor for the interplay between nature and technology
While working on the visuals for this book, I delved into the beguiling realm of bacterial cultures, capturing their beauty in all its varied forms—from wispy mold to fluid wax. The blending of natural bacterial structures with computational geometric patterns serves as a metaphor for the interplay between the artist and technology in this creative process.
My artwork is a visual composition, highlighting the harmony that arises from the collision of opposing forces. I strive to create pieces that not only intrigue and captivate the viewer, but also provoke thought and reflection on the relationship between humanity and technology, the natural and the artificial.
Leveraging AI's capabilities in the creative process
The layout and order of the artworks in this book are meant to create a visual journey. As you flip through its pages, you will notice the evolution of the works and gain an understanding of the creative process behind them. The following sentences will give you a short glimpse into the process behind the visuals for this book.
Future 1: blending of nature and geometry My process is rooted in research and experimentation. Early on, I explored the depths of natural structures, from the vastness of the universe to the intricacies of cells, by zooming in and out. In parallel, I looked for various geometric shapes and patterns. Using artificial intelligence, I brought these contrasting structures together to create a unique visual language. Finding the right balance between natural and geometric forms is a delicate task, but through experimentation and perseverance, I achieved a satisfactory blend of both elements. I went through several trial and error rounds to achieve a result with which I could continue working.
Future 2: achieving abstraction After completing the image generation process, I needed to make several refinements. The images still held strong ties to nature and had vibrant colours, resulting in bold and striking appearances. To soften the image’s boldness, I experimented with text-to-image technology, which allowed me to adjust specific parameters and generate more abstract and clean images. This technique enabled me to seamlessly combine large shapes and natural structures to create harmonious abstract artworks.
Future 3: adding repetition After the last two steps, I focused on generating greater abstraction in those images, specifically in the way natural structures were represented. Despite blending the two contrasting initial inputs, I wasn’t satisfied with the balance between contrasts, so I continued playing with text-to-image technology. Therefore, I set several prompts that generated images with more prominent repetitive geometric patterns. This approach helped me finally achieve the desired blurring between the natural and artificial, visualised as bacterial growth in repeating geometric patterns. Finally, I used Photoshop to give the images the final touch.
A new era of possibilities
Art is a reflection of the society and culture in which it is produced. It has always been shaped by the technological, social, political and economic structures of the time. From the past to the present and into the future, art continues to mirror the shifts and developments of the world around it, providing a unique window into the historical, social, cultural and technological context of any given era. Saying that, this current era is just a short point in time in the ever-evolving process where the artist's imagination and the advancements in technology will shape the way art is crafted. As the world and people evolve, so will the art they create.
So rather than viewing these emerging technologies as a threat to the art world as we know it today, I see them as a catalyst for diversity and innovation, opening up a realm of untapped potential for exploring new and unique forms of artistic expression. With each turn of the earth, art will continue to push boundaries and redefine itself as it has been doing for thousands of years. Therefore, I look forward to what's ahead.
